• Established as the Department of Child Welfare within the College of Social Sciences.

1989

• Renamed the Department of Social Welfare; Prof. Jong-Man Baek appointed.

1991

• Profs. Yeon-Ok Kim and Won-Kyu Choi appointed.

1992

• First bachelor’s degree graduates from the Department of Social Welfare.

1995

• Establishment of the Social Welfare Department practice lab.

1997

• Master’s program in Social Welfare launched; Prof. Kyung-Jun Hong in service (Mar 1997 – Jan 2000).

1998

• Prof. Myung-Sook Yoon appointed; opening of Haedeun-Nuri Counseling Center at Jeonju Probation Office; establishment of Unemployed Social Welfare Support Center under the Jeonbuk University Social Science Research Institute; Prof. Hyun-Sun Park appointed; 10th anniversary academic seminar held.

2000

• Prof. Ok-Chae Choi appointed; first and second master’s degree graduates.

2001

• Prof. In-Hoe Koo appointed; third and fourth master’s degree graduates.

2002

• Prof. Hong-Sik Yoon appointed; doctoral program in Social Welfare launched; Jeonbuk Alcohol Counseling Center established; Department recognized as “Best Faculty” by the Korean Council for University Education evaluation.

2003

• First national examination for Level 1 Social Workers; 100% pass rate.

2004

• Prof. Mi-Ok Kim appointed; Master’s program in Social Welfare established at the Graduate School of Public Administration; first colloquium held.

2005

• Colloquiums 2–5 held.

2006

• Colloquiums 6–8 held.

2007

• Prof. Shin-Yeol Kim appointed; colloquiums 9–10 held.

2008

• Prof. Sang-Rok Lee appointed; 20th anniversary celebration of the department; colloquiums 12–13 held.

2009

• Colloquium 14 held.

2010

• Prof. Soon-Gyu Kim appointed; colloquium 15 held.

2011

• Hosted the Fall Joint Academic Conference of the Korean Association of Social Welfare; colloquium 16 held.

2012

• Prof. Young-Hoon Yeo appointed.

• Participation in BK21 Plus Project.

2016

• Social Welfare Research Institute established.

• Participation in JBNU Practical Competency Certification Program (formerly ACE Project).

2018

• Hosted the Fall Joint Academic Conference of the Korean Association of Social Welfare; 30th anniversary celebration of the department.
